Thomas Cook demo in Manchester

As part of an international day
of action, calling for a boycott of Mauritius, campaigners from MAP held a
protest outside Thomas Cook in Manchester,as they are the main dealers in
holidays to Mauritius (one of the biggest exporters of primates for vivisection).
The demo was lively and several hundred leaflets were handed out to the passing
public, calling for a boycott of Mauritius as a holiday destination until
the country stops exporting primates. Staff from the shop came out to look
what was going on, but didn't want to get into conversation. They soon called
police and one lowly officer came up who reassured us that we were being watched
on the many CCTV cameras around the pedestrianised area, so we'd better be
on our best behaviour!! He went into the shop and was soon on his way, not
having much to say.
Near the end of the demo, some cool punk kids came by and horrified by what
they read and saw, they joined in the demo, telling the staff what they thought
of them. One member of staff then came out and tried to tell us that he was
pleased the demo was happening as it has really boosted sales in their shop!!!
Strange then, that many people had turned away! Interesting, that such
individuals would have so much loyalty towards a company which sees them as
'expendable 'items'!!
