NEPAL EMBASSY DEMO IN PARIS
On the 9th of June,activists from the Coalition Anti-Vivisection in France protested at the Nepalese Embassy in Paris against Nepal's proposed exportation of rhesus monkeys to American laboratories.
Such was the interest from passers-by that the megaphone was barely in use as the activists explained to people why they were staging an anti-vivisection protest in such a posh area of Paris. Without fail, people were shocked and appalled that Nepal would send their sacred wildlife to American laboratories...and they recoiled as we recounted stories of experiments performed on monkeys in laboratories, such as the experiment performed at Oxford University in England where "scientists" brain damaged a monkey to the point where it ate it's own excrement, (just to see whether it was possible to achieve).
Once again we were invited to meet the ambassador to discuss the issues regarding the monkey exports and once again we had a positive meeting where the ambassador explained his opposition to the exploitation of Nepal's wildlife. It was explained that the money Nepal will gain from their plans to export monkeys to the USA will be minimal in comparison with the money they will lose as a result of the damage done to their tourist industry if their sordid plans go ahead.
We also explained how a number of "ethical" tourism guides have expressed their concern and vowed to write critical reviews of Nepal if the exports commence this September. We were requested to send a letter, which would be forwarded to the new government in Nepal, outlining our concerns and detailing the potential repercussions should the exports occur. The ambassador even stated that if he didn't work for a government agency he would be a member of a group such as ours because he too respects all life...and that the democratically elected government "must listen to the will of the people".
Due
to the public interest in our protest we decided to return the next day
to do an information stand and flyer action, as that way we would be
able to provide the maximum exposure to Nepal's sick plans to send their
monkeys to America...To the "care" of a man, Dr Gene P. Sackett
of the
University of Washington, who has based his career on studying the effects
of taking babies from their mothers!!!
